League Format

  • The 2025/26 league consists of 13 teams. One team will have a bye; the other 12 teams play each Tuesday at 5pm.
    • The first round runs October 7 – December 16 or 23rd (to be confirmed)
    • The second round runs January 6 – March 10.  All games will be a maximum of 8 ends.
    • Playoffs are expected to run 4 weeks, running from March 17 to April 7.
  • No curling on December 30th; December 23rd TBD
  • Teams will accumulate points from wins (3) and ties (1). Ties are not broken. The winning vice is responsible for entering the game result on the website after the game.
  • A team must have at least three players to play an official game, of which two players must be registered on that team.

How to find a spare

There are three spare lists, listed in order of preference:

  1. The bye team should be your first choice for finding spares.
  2. A club member spare list on the KW Granite website, the longest list of spares
  3. A non club member spare list on the league’s Info page, a shorter list of spares
  1. How to find the club member spare list:
Login into the KW Granite website:
    • under Member’s Home, go to “Find a Spare”
    • select the Tuesday Social League
    • select some or all of the spares that match your position and send an email via the website
  1. How to find the non-club member spare list:
Login into the KW Granite website:
    • under Member’s Home, go to “Info, Teams, Schedules, Standings”
    • select “info” next to the Tuesday Social League
    • scroll down for the spare list and email the spare directly

Non-Member Spare List

This is a separate list from the online list because spares that are not club members are not able to sign up on the online spare list. Non-members spares know they are required pay $25 fee at the bar each night they spare.

How to enter the game result

The winning vice is required to enter the game result by Wednesday.

Typically this can be done using the club tablet at the bulletin board behind table 3.
However, you can also use your own device if you already left the club:

Login into the KW Granite website:

  • under Member’s Home, go to "My Next Games”
  • scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on the "Result Entry" button
  • the next page displays a list of your games up to the current date that do not have the score recorded
  • Select the Tuesday Night Social game and enter the score
    • If no game appears, then the result has already been recorded by someone else

Five-Rock Rule

No opponent's rock resting in the free-guard zone may be removed from play until after the fifth rock has been thrown.

Defaults

  • A default will result in a win for the non-defaulting team. Please let your opponent know via email if you are unable to field a team, so they do not arrive at the club without an opportunity to play a game.
  • A team may choose to play with more than 2 non-registered members. This is a default situation and they will score loss points.

Substitution

Spares must play at or lower than the position of the curler they are replacing. If you are unavailable on any of the game dates, be sure to secure a spare and let you team know. Use the Find a Spare feature on the website for your substitutions. You may also use other club members or non-club members as a spare as per the Granite Club Spare Policy.

Late Start/End of Game

Do not begin a new end if there is less than 15 minutes remaining when the last rock of the previous end is thrown (eg:  you can start a new end if the clock shows 6:44, but not 6:45).

K-W Granite Club Registration Policy 2026-27

As several leagues may be at capacity, the following registration policy will be used to give preference to returning members from the 2025/2026 season while welcoming and encouraging new members to the KW Granite Club leagues as availability allows.

Registered means a signed form AND paid in full or signed up for installments.

Returning Members

Returning members can register as soon as registration is open. Preference will be given to returning members for the SAME league as they played last year.

As of Sept 1, 2026, registration is open on a first come first serve basis to new members.

Registrants will be placed in one of two Registration Sections:

  1. The Individual Section if they register as an individual
  2. Team Section if they register as a team as described below.

Team Entries – requires 3 registered members (at least 2 previously in that league).

Returning members that are placed in the Individual Section are not necessarily guaranteed their entry. Date and time are factors; individuals will be placed on teams as positions become available.

After Sept 1, 2026, and after all returning members who have previous played in that league have been processed (either slotted into Individual or Team sections), then returning members selecting a new league are slotted into the Individual or Team section. Returning members selecting a new league will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis. Any remaining spots will be given to new members on a first come, first serve basis. If the league reaches capacity, then the registrant is put on a WAIT list (based on registration date and time).

If someone was listed as part of someone else’s team entry and has not registered and paid, they are removed IF there is someone on the WAIT list for that league. (This would either be a returning member opting for a new night or a new member.)

Team Compositions

Open  Teams may be any combination of genders, playing in any order
Mixed Teams must consist of two or more different gender identities with the following structure: positions of Skip and Vice must have players identifying as two different genders and again Lead and Second players must also identify as two different genders.
Men All players are male
Women       All players are female

Most leagues are based on teams and these teams play together through the season. League convenors will assist in putting team entries together as required.

Exceptions to team compositions may be made at the discretion of the league convenor to maximize the placement of registered individuals and experience levels, i.e. mixed teams with alternate team compositions.

The published league listing will indicate the throwing order and is the official team listing when required, such as playoffs, spares, and external events. General curling rules will apply for all league play.

Exceptions to league formats require approval from the Board of Directors.

League Registration Closure

Convenors may request (by contacting the office) that registration for their league be closed when the league is

  1. full or
  2. 5 days before the league start date.

  • All games have a maximum of eight ends, or until the team with the lower score concedes, or time prevents starting a new end.
  • The intent of the game is to finish eight ends in the time allowed. The first rock of each end needs to be played on the quarter hour in order to keep pace.
  • No end may start after 11:03am for a 9:15am start time or after 2:48pm for a 1pm start time. The time is checked when the skip's final rock comes to rest.
  • The lead for the team scoring in the previous end will NOT assist in clearing the near end but immediately prepare to throw the first rock.
  • Five rock rule: An opponent’s rock in the Free Guard Zone may be moved but not removed until delivering the sixth stone in each end. (12.2)
  • Hog line rule: Rocks must be clearly released before the front of the stone touches the near edge of the near hog line. (8.4)
  • Touched Moving Stone rules (touched between hog lines) (9.3):
  • If touched by delivering team, stone is immediately removed. If touched by opposition or external force, stone is stopped and stone is thrown again.
  • Touched Moving Stone rules (if over far hog line) (applies to thrown & raised stones) (9,4):
  • All stones are first allowed to come to rest. Any moving stone touched shall be treated as a Touched Stone. Any moving stone touched by both teams shall be treated as if only touched by the last team to touch stone.
  • If touched by own team, non-offending team chooses to a) remove touched stone and return stones to previous position; OR b) Leave all stones where resting; OR c) Place stones where they would rest if stone not touched.
  • If touched by opposition, non-offending team places stones where they would rest if stone not touched.
  • If touched by external force (from another sheet), place stones where they would rest if stone not touched, OR return stones to previous position and stone is thrown again.
  • If touched by deflection off bumper, non-delivering team places stones where they would rest if stone not touched.
  • No stone may be swept until it is set in motion. (11,2)
  • For the first five stones of an end, two players of the non-delivering team may sweep their own raised rocks before the tee line. (11.3)
  • For the last seven rocks of an end only the skip or vice of the non-delivering team may sweep their own raised rocks. (11.4)
  • An opponent’s moving stone may be swept when an edge of the stone touches the far tee line and sweeping only takes place behind that tee line (11.7).
  • When using a delivery stick, players must start in the hack or the stone must touch the centre line. (17.6)

Legal team definition

To play an official game, you must have a legal team. If a legal team is not present within 15 minutes of the scheduled start time, the team will default the game for zero points. Borrowing or co-opting a player from the opposing team does not qualify as a Spare, even if a game is played.

A legal team is defined as follows:

  • 3 or 4 team members
  • 3 team members plus one spare
  • 2 team members plus one or two spares

Jitney to Start Season

  • For the first game of the season a Jitney format will be played. This game is optional with teams being selected the day of the Jitney. Please come 30 minutes before start time to pick position and team.

Schedule

  • The season is broken into three or more rounds so curlers may socialize with as many members as possible.
  • Teams are picked randomly before the beginning of each round.
  • Teams are selected with the intent that members curl with different members from one round to the next.

Number of Teams

  • The league can accommodate up to 56 curlers in each event. If there are 56 curlers, there will be 14 teams.
  • The league will publish the names of curlers willing to spare.
  • Players wanting to spare can be found on the Club website, under the League page & the SUBS tab.
  • If required, games may be scheduled at a different time on the same day.

Throw off

  • As a tie-breaker for standings in the round, teams throw five rocks after the first game played in each round. No deferral if playing with a spare player.
  • Teams not participating will score zero.
  • The winning team throws first. Sweeping is allowed.
  • Rocks shall be thrown in the order of: lead, second, vice & skip in the same order as played in the game just completed.
  • Lead, second, & vice throw one rock each. If the team only has three curlers, the lead throws two rocks. The skip throws two rocks. The skip’s second rock counts double.
  • The rocks are left in place until all five of the team's rocks are thrown & counted.
  • The center of the 2 foot circle is “the pin”. Touch Pin=9, Full Two=8, Touch Two=7, Full Four=6, Touch Four=5, Full Eight=4, Touch Eight=3, Full Twelve=2. Touch Twelve=1.

Scoring for Standings

  • Winning team will receive three points, defeated team will receive one point.
  • Both teams tying will receive two points.
  • Teams that default will receive zero points & the winning team will receive three points.

Prizes and Resolving ties in Standings

  • There are prizes for the winning teams from each round.
  • For Leagues with one Division, the top two teams receive a prize. For Leagues with two Divisions, the top team in each Division receives a prize.

Ties in the standings for a Round are decided in the following order:

  • If there is a tie in the standings for two teams, the result of the head to head game is used, unless tied.
  • If there is a tie for three teams & one team defeated both the other teams, the winning team is selected.
  • In all other cases, the team scores from the throw off for that round will be used.
  • If the throw off is tied between the top two teams, and the teams are in a league with one Division, the total prize money for first and second place shall be evenly split between the two teams. Otherwise a public coin toss shall be held to determine placement, allowing the coin to fall to the floor.

Concussion Awareness

  • It does not take much to cause a fall on the ice. It is recommended that you wear some form of head protection.
  • The club has a number of options for sale. There are visors, toques, helmets, headbands & caps.
  • The Province of Ontario has implemented Rowan's Law to highlight the need for concussion awareness. Learn more about Rowan's Law.

Monday Night Open Round 1

Monday Night Open team list

This league is available to any combination of 4 members. Teams do not have to follow any set configuration. The convenor of the event will seed returning and new teams into divisions at the start of the year. Returning teams will be seeded using the previous year’s point totals and new teams will be seeded at the convener’s discretion. To be considered a returning team, a team needs to have, from the previous year, the skip and one other player, or the 3 other players minus the skip. Any other combination will be considered a “new” team to this league.

League Format:

  • The format consists of 38 teams divided into 6 divisions of 6 or 7 teams each. There will be four 5-night rounds followed by a 5 week of playoff round. Draw times will rotate through the 5:00, 7:00, and 9:00 time slots where possible.
  • Each round will be a full or partial round robin where teams accumulate points from wins, losses or ties (See point system below). At the end of each round, all teams will be reorganized and seeded based on their accumulated point totals. Each team will carry forward half of its accumulated points into the next round.
    • Division E and F will have byes in the first round (7 teams each)
    • Division A and B will have byes in the second round (7 teams each)
    • Division C and D will have byes in the third round (7 teams each)
    • Division E and F will have byes in the fourth round (7 Teams each)
  • There are no points given for a bye.
  • Teams with byes will get an average of their other scores for the round added to their total to be used to rank the teams and make the new division.
  • In the event of a default, the non-defaulting team skip will choose the outcome of the game.

Point System:

If teams are tied in total points (round and carryover) at the end of a round, the following system will be used to break ties:

  1. Win/Loss record against each other
  2. If teams from different divisions are tied, the higher division team will be considered to be ahead.
  3. Shoot out scores

** At present there is one unallocated Thursday - March 19. This date falls during March break. There will be curling on this date with the format still to be determined.

For round 1, we have seeded teams to the best of our ability. Please note that we have seeded teams based on last year’s standings, the number of new players on a team, and the number of curlers on the team with less than 5 years of experience.

Rules of Play

This league follows the CCA Rules of Curling for General Play. All skips and vices should be familiar with these rules. If there is a disagreement about the rules between opposing teams during a game, you should call over an experienced curler from another sheet or from the lounge to confirm the rules. Free Guards Zone rule of 5 rocks applies to games. This means no opponent's rock resting in the free-guard zone may be removed from play until after the fifth rock has been thrown.

Pace of Play

All curlers are to make every effort to keep the game moving quickly. Tips for keeping the game moving include the following: as soon as your opponent has released the rock, get down and set up your shot while your opposition rock glides to a halt; the front end can grab the skip rock and clean it while they await the upcoming throw; and, the further skips think ahead for strategy, the quicker decisions can be made - save time on the easier decisions so you can think over the difficult ones.

Points System

Division    WIN    TIE/BYE    LOSS    DEFAULT
A 20 15 10 0
B 18 13 9 0
C 16 11 8 0
D 14 9 7 0

Each team is responsible for posting their win/loss on the website after each game.

Shoot-out Score

The shoot-out score is helpful in breaking ties at the end of a round. Perform the shoot-out during round 1 and email the team’s total score to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. If you do not submit a score by the end of round 1 (November 7), you will be given 0 points.

How to determine the team’s shoot-out score: Each team member throws one draw to the button with sweeping. Rocks stay in play until all 4 rocks have been delivered. Points for shootout:

  • 5 points touch pin
  • 4 points touch button
  • 3 touch 4 foot
  • 2 touch 8 foot
  • 1 touch 12 foot

Late Start

To start the game, you must have three players. The penalty for a late start is: After 10 minutes, the non-offending team counts one point for the first end and has the hammer to start the second. This repeats at the 20-minute mark. After 25 minutes, the offending team forfeits the game. If a player is late, the teams must agree beforehand when she enters the game. For example, she may enter an end already in progress providing she is able to deliver a stone within the team's established delivery rotation.

Late Finish

For the 5 pm and 7 pm draw, do not begin a new end if there is less than 10 minutes remaining when the last rock of the previous end is thrown (the clock must read 6:49 or 8:49 or earlier).

Breaking Ties

During the 4 regular season rounds, you do not need to break a tie if your game is tied after eight ends. Points for ties are indicated above.

Defaulting Games

If you cannot field a team with at least two original team members and a spare, you can contact the opposing team and try to arrange a makeup game at a different time. If both teams agree to play at another time, please arrange this with the club manager John Thomas. The makeup game must be played before the last game in the round. The opposing team is under no obligation to reschedule the game. If you cannot find a time to play a makeup game, you must default. In this case, email the opposing team and the draw convener to inform them that you are defaulting.

If your team is asked to reschedule a game, you should make a reasonable effort to find a time for the makeup game; however, you are not obligated to reschedule. For example, if you need to get a spare in order to field a team, you do not have to play the makeup game.

Defaulting teams receive zero points, except in the case where the team cannot play a scheduled game because the team is representing the club at a provincial or national event. In this case, the team receives loss points.

Spares

A team must have at least 3 players to play. At least 2 players must be original team members. A spare must play in the position of the player being replaced or lower. For a playoff game, if the skip is absent, the position cannot be replaced by a spare. Another member of the original team must assume the skip position. Options for finding a spare:

  • Use the Spare List (see the club’s website under “Member’s Home/League Information/Find a Spare”) for your substitutions or ask a curler from those teams with a bye that night or a fifth player.
  • You may use other club members or non club members as a spare as per the Granite Club Spare Policy (see the club’s website under “Member’s Home/League Information/Spare Policy”).
  • Curlers that have a full daytime membership can spare a limited number of times (approx. 5 times).

Everest Club Championship & Representative Process

The principles of this event target non-elite teams (grassroots club curlers) who regularly compete in their clubs. Teams, however, are no longer limited to being the club champion to be considered eligible.

All four (4) players must be residents of the same Provincial / Territorial Member Association. Three (3) of the four (4) players must be a minimum of nineteen (19) years of age and older on November 1st prior to the year of the championship. There are no citizenship requirements.

Each four-person team is allowed to have one (1) player who, during the previous three (3) curling seasons, has participated in the Canada Cup; and/or, the Continental Cup; and/or, the Under-21; and/or, the Tournament of Hearts; and/or, the Brier; and/or, the Under-18; and/or, the Canadian Wheelchair; and/or, any Canadian Trials or Pre-Trials event; or any provincial / territorial event leading to these events. This same player can have played in a Tier 1 or Tier 2 Grand Slam event in the previous three (3) curling seasons.

PLEASE be sure you are aware of the eligibility of any team / team members to avoid any issues. Links to the most recent available information on eligibility 2025-26 are provided below. This year we will be only selecting one male and one female team.

Thursday Night Women’s Convenors

Friday Night Mixed 2024/2025

This is a mixed league. The convenor seeds returning teams using the previous year’s point totals. New teams and players are seeded into the divisions at the convenor’s discretion.

League Format

  • The league consists of up to 24 teams divided into several divisions. Each round is a round-robin format.
  • Teams accumulate points from wins, ties, byes, and losses.
    • Ties are not broken and are recorded as a tie.
    • A team that has a bye is awarded tie points.
  • At the end of each round, the teams are re-sorted into divisions based on their point totals.

Teams

  • Mixed League Teams must consist of two or more different gender identities with the following structure: positions of Skip and Vice must have players identifying as two different genders and again Lead and Second players must also identify as two different genders.
  • Based on entrants to the league, there may be exceptions at the convenor's discretion.

Only an official team can record a win. For a team to be an official team, it:

  • must have at least three players, and
  • must have at least two players from the registered team.

If you can’t field an official team, you can still field a non-official team, play a game, and record loss points (regardless of game result). Fielding a non-official team is often much better for all concerned than defaulting the game altogether. Loss points are better than default points and you don’t disappoint your opponents by not being able to play.

If you have a 3-player team composed of 3 regular team members, play in your normal order. For example, if you have a male skip, female vice, male 2nd, and female lead, if you are missing your male 2nd, play in the usual order with female lead throwing 3 rocks, female vice throwing 3 rocks, and male skip throwing 2 rocks.

Points for wins, losses, byes, and ties

A team is awarded points depending on their division and the result of their game.

Entering Results

It is the responsibility of the vice of either team to enter the game results. You can enter the results:

  • On the website
  • On the scoresheet that is posted on the club bulletin board between the change rooms
  • By emailing the convenor, if neither of the above works.

Division Placement at end of round

At the end of a round, teams are re-seeded into divisions based on the number of points they accumulated during the round. If teams are tied, and only one of them can go up or down a division, the convenor will break the tie following these rules in order:

  1. Head-to-head result.
  2. Division placement. (Higher division team remains higher.)
  3. Tie-break shootout score. (See below.)
  4. Coin toss.

Regardless of points total, a team can only move up or down a division at the end of a round. For example, If an A team goes winless for an entire round and would be placed in C division based on points, they are nonetheless placed in B division.

There is no tie-break procedure for team placement within a single division. If you are tied with another team at the end of a round, your teams will be listed in an arbitrary order, for example alphabetically.

Tie-Break Shootout

Team shootout scores can be used to break ties in the standings.

At a convenient time, each FNM league member shall throw one rock, with sweeping, scoring points as follows:

  • 1 for 12 foot
  • 2 for 8 foot
  • 3 for 4 foot
  • 4 for button
  • 5 for pin.

The rock merely needs to touch the border of the scoring area to count points. For example, a biter counts 1 point (because it is touching the 12 foot).

Try to do your shootout throws as early as practical. It is not mandatory that you do a shootout, but if your team is tied with a team that did and shootout scores come into play, the team that recorded a shootout wins the tie-breaker. It is easiest to schedule your shootout after a 21:00 draw or after an early game that finishes quickly.  Do not start a shootout after an early draw if it will delay the start of the next game.

Defaults and Forfeits

If you can’t make it to the club for a scheduled game, work with your opponents, your convenor, and the club. Maybe the other team will agree to reschedule. If not, maybe the club or the opposing team might want to use your ice anyway. The points for a default depend on whether you give notification at least a day in advance of the game. But you should give your opponents as much notification as you possibly can.

  • Default with notification [Loss points]
Occurs when the defaulting team has notified their opponent by email that they cannot play a scheduled game and offered to reschedule or simply default the game.
  • Default without notification [0 points]
Occurs when the offending team fails to arrive for a scheduled game without notifying the other team. This is considered a forfeit.
  • Default because of team constitution [Loss points]
If a team fields a 3-player or 4-player non-official team, its result is recorded as a loss (not a default), and the opposing team’s result is recorded as a win.

Start and Finish times

Start

  • Please be ready to play 10 minutes before your game’s start time. You should begin play before your scheduled start time if your sheet is ready!
  • Late start penalties for teammates getting to the ice late:
    • After 10 minutes past scheduled game time, the non-offending team scores one for the first end and has the hammer to start the second end.
    • After 20 minutes past scheduled game time, the non-offending team scores one for the second end and has the hammer to start the third end.
    • After 30 minutes past scheduled game time, the game is defaulted by the offending team.
  • Players need to play efficiently to complete 8 ends. Players delivering rocks should be ready to throw as soon as the previous rock has come to rest.

Finish

  • For draw at 19:00, do not begin a new end if there are less than 10 minutes remaining when the last rock of the previous end is thrown (the clock must read 6:49 or 8:49 or earlier)
  • For the draw at 19:00, please try to finish your last end in a reasonable time and be considerate of the time of the team that is playing next on the sheet
  • For the draw at 21:00, do not begin a new end once 23:01 is showing on the clock.
  • The next end is deemed to have started, once the considered underway once the final rock of the Skip with hammer crosses the delivering tee line in the current end.

In other words:

  • 19:00 start: If the final skip rock of the 7th end crosses the delivering tee line when the clock reads no later than 20:49, the 8th end can be played.
  • 21:00 start: If the final skip rock of the 7th end crosses the delivering tee line when the clock reads no later than 23:00, the 8th end can be played.

Substitution:

Our popular adult Learn to Curl program provides complete instruction to new curlers. Over six sessions you’ll learn all about the wonderful sport of curling: how to throw a rock, how to sweep, and how the game is played. Each session will feature a combination of instruction and playing the game, all guided by our friendly coaches.

The program runs in the Fall from October to December. The sessions are on Saturday mornings from 9 am to noon. The fee for all six sessions is $225 plus HST, which includes a slider that is yours to keep. All you need to bring is a clean pair of shoes to change into at the club.

Your Learn To Curl fee will be credited toward league fees either in January following the fall program or a discount applied in thefollowing season.

This program is popular and often has a wait list. Online registration for the fall session starts in August.  You do not need to be a member to participate. You register directly for the Learn to Curl program.

  • Available ice can be booked for ONE HOUR by MEMBERS up to 7 days in advance. *
  • Any team may book one hour/team/every other week.
  • Other members of the same team and/or the same curlers cannot book an adjacent time slot.
  • If you are attempting to practice hits/take-outs, you should have another person with you at the far end to catch the rocks/prevent damage to the hacks.
  • Should you no longer require the ice, please login and cancel your booking. This is done by visiting the Member's Only area (Membership Information > My Ice Bookings).
  • Practice ice may be revoked for a Rental with a minimum of 24 hours’ notice.

Note: We use a 7 Day Rolling Booking for Practice Ice.
In a 7-day rolling booking system for practice curling ice, reservations can only be made for time slots that fall within exactly seven days from the current time. For instance, if today is Monday at 1:00 PM, you can book ice for the following Monday at 1:00 PM—but not for 1:01 PM or later, as those times haven't rolled into availability yet. This system requires precise timing: new slots open minute-by-minute, not day-by-day. So checking the system frequently, especially at the exact time you want for the following week, gives you the best chance to secure your preferred spot. Cancellations or adjustments might create openings.
You must have a web account with KWGC and login to book ice.
